Mary grew up a block from current First Baptist Church and rarely left the place. She enjoyed playing games with boys and being outdoors. She attended and graduated, at age 16, from Comanche High School. Following graduation, she attended John Tarleton College and received her Associate Degree. Mary was a proud member of the school’s Rifle Team. Following college, Mary worked a couple of years in a government work program. Mary married Herbert Goodson May 30, 1941, in Austin. He had attended and graduated from Texas A&M and was commissioned in the United States Army. The couple traveled to several army bases, Mineral Wells, Texas, Indio California, and Columbus, Georgia, before Herbert was transferred overseas. When he returned 26 months later, it was to Comanche, TX. They opened their insurance agency where she worked occasionally while the two children were growing up and then a bit more vigorously before she retired to other functions she enjoyed. Mary loved playing golf, doing needle work, and fishing. It didn’t matter where the water was located, local lakes or at the Gulf, she greatly enjoyed fishing. Mary was a member of First Baptist Church Comanche from age 9 making her a 90+ year Christian veteran. She said her secret to her longevity was “she was always happy and never bored”.
